DENVER (AP) — Parts of the Denver area could see another 7 inches of snow by this afternoon before the season's first major winter storm moves out of Colorado.

The National Weather Service says snow will continue falling through Thursday and the metro area is under a winter storm warning until 6 p.m. Some areas in the foothills have already seen as much as 3 feet of snow.

The heaviest snowfall was expected to shift to the Plains later in the day and the National Weather Service said gusty winds of up to 40 mph could create severe drifts.

Transportation officials say road conditions around the state are snow-packed and icy but no major accidents have been reported. U.S. 6 is closed over Loveland Pass and Interstate 1-25 is closed from Wellington to Cheyenne.
