COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs Police Department responded to a 3-car crash just after 7 p.m. Sunday on Academy Boulevard and Dublin Boulevard.
Police report a 2008 Toyota Scion driven by Curtis Burdette had been traveling north on Academy, racing a red Honda. Burdette lost control of the Scion as it drove past Dublin Boulevard and struck the center median. The Scion continued on the median until it entered the southbound lanes of traffic on Academy Boulevard.
A 2005 Pontiac Soltice, vehicle number two, was traveling south on Academy Boulevard when the driver saw an airborne vehicle, the Scion, coming into his lane of traffic. The Soltice driver was able to react by moving to the right and avoided a head on-collision.
However, the Soltice was hit in the left rear end with enough force to completely shear off its left rear wheel, sending the wheel flying south into the front grill of vehicle number three, a 2003 Cadillac Escalade, also traveling southbound.
The driver of the Pontiac Soltice and a passenger were transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
Burdette has been charged with reckless driving and numerous other charges.
Speed was a factor in the accident and the red Honda, the second car in the inital racing down Academy Boulevard, has not been located.
