John Edwards's defunct presidential campaign spent more than $43,000 on legal fees in October, showing that the former senator still has a wide range of legal problems to deal with nearly two years since he ended his White House bid.

A monthly Federal Election Commission report filed Friday shows that Edwards's campaign spent $43,573.92 in legal consulting with Utrecht & Phillips, a Washington law firm.

A spokesperson for Edwards did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Despite the end of the campaign in January 2008, Edwards's campaign has been busy. It has a tad more than $3 million on hand and spent more than $96,000 in October, including more than $4,000 in airfare and roughly $15,000 in salary to Edwards's former chief financial officer and comptroller.

The FEC filing does not explain exactly what legal services Edwards is getting from the firm.

Edwards has had a series of legal issues stemming from his confession that he was romantically involved with Rielle Hunter, a former campaign aide, who was hired to film campaign videos. Hunter was deposed as part of a federal investigation into whether Edwards illegally paid her and another campaign aide for their silence about the affair.-

I think this lawyer - primarily known for bankrupting hospitals and doctors - could answer your question.

He was a Democrat Vice President (little irony, there?) and a contender for President.

Following right in Clinton's (the fatter, less manly Clinton, with fatter girlfriends) footsteps, both politically and sexually speaking.

Not there is too much difference between the parties - even Ike had a few lady friends in Europe during the 2nd war to end all wars.

But you need to confess that Edwards is a scoundrel, and the 43K is about 1/2 what he handed off to his girlfriend to video tape something or other . . .

rest in peace, ambulance chaser

I liked a previous readers post calling we Dems "dumocrats". I fail to see what that statement has to do with the story. Oh, I know what it was, typical Republican meanness. Don't you guys have to go cheer for Sarah Palin some where?

Good investment?

I'll bet some of the morons that invested their money in that camp would like a second chance, heh? Not only is edwards a typical dumocrat, he never had a chance of winning the nomination.
