John Edwards's defunct presidential campaign spent more than $43,000 on legal fees in October, showing that the former senator still has a wide range of legal problems to deal with nearly two years since he ended his White House bid.
A monthly Federal Election Commission report filed Friday shows that Edwards's campaign spent $43,573.92 in legal consulting with Utrecht & Phillips, a Washington law firm.
A spokesperson for Edwards did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Despite the end of the campaign in January 2008, Edwards's campaign has been busy. It has a tad more than $3 million on hand and spent more than $96,000 in October, including more than $4,000 in airfare and roughly $15,000 in salary to Edwards's former chief financial officer and comptroller.
The FEC filing does not explain exactly what legal services Edwards is getting from the firm.
Edwards has had a series of legal issues stemming from his confession that he was romantically involved with Rielle Hunter, a former campaign aide, who was hired to film campaign videos. Hunter was deposed as part of a federal investigation into whether Edwards illegally paid her and another campaign aide for their silence about the affair.-
