School District 11 investigates all threats

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO -- As parents send their children off to school, the common thought is that they're safe. But tragedy does strike, like the 1999 Columbine High School shooting in Littleton.
Elaine Naleski with School District 11 tells FOX21 News threatening calls do come in and it's something they take very seriously.
“Some of the tips that have come in have been serious, are weapons, or a bomb threat. We have some tips saying there is going to be a drive-by shooting at one of the schools and we take those very seriously,” said Naleski.
Naleski says experts who evaluate the calls understand there is always the possibility of a student trying to get another student into trouble or is playing a joke. But she explains that's why every call is investigated and determined how to treat it after the investigation.
“The one time that maybe you chose to think that it's a hoax, could be the one time that it's a reality and we don't want that to ever happen,” said Naleski.
Safe2TellTM is a statewide anonymous reporting tool, available 24 hours a day to accept calls whenever a Colorado youth or concerned adult perceives a threat to their safety or the safety of others. It’s to make sure if a student were to make a threat, it can be stopped before tragedy strikes.
“You have to treat every threat, every suspicion, every tip as if it's really going to happen,” said Naleski.
