DENVER (AP) -- A foundation created by Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is issuing a grant for the Denver Police Department's K-9 program.

Denver police have been looking for help to buy a new police dog to help replace canines retiring at the end of the year. The department's K-9 supervisor, Sgt. Evan Hvizdak, says The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation grant will allow the department to keep service dogs on the front lines.

The foundation is distributing grants to police and fire departments in the cities of each Steelers away-game opponent this season. The Steelers meet the Denver Broncos Monday night at Invesco Field at Mile High.

Stephanie Sandler of The Giving Back Fund, a national charity that works with the foundation, says the average grant for a police canine and a vest totals $8,000.
