COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- At Stetson Elemetary School Tuesday, students painted carp while learning about Japanese culture.

It was all part of a bigger event: Around the World Day.

"It starts with Around the World Day activities for the students where they are going to travel around. The third, fourth and fifth graders have been learning about different continents:  third grade, Antartica; fourth grade, Asia; and fifth grade, Europe. And then kindergarten, first and second grade will travel travel to the continents and visit the countries," fourth grade teacher Leah Ebel said.

Ebel said the students will participate in different activities while visiting each country. She said she came up with the idea while in Japan last year.

"I was just trying to think about a way I could bring it back to not only my class but the school as well, so I could get them to experience the amazing cultural experiences," Ebel said.

She said the third, fourth and fifth graders have been studying their respective continent since the beginning of the semester.

For example, the fourth graders spent part of Tuesday making Chinese tangrams.

"We have studied a whole bunch of things to do with culture. We learned how to count to 10 in Chinese, which the kids really enjoyed, and we did caligraphy. The kids learned how to write the different characters and we used ink and caligraphy pens, so that was really fun," fourth grade teacher Christine Carrico said.

While visiting each country the students will be able to have their passport stamped as a reminder of their travels and what they have experienced.

The students said it is important to learn about other countries and cultures.

"To learn their language in case you ever want to visit there," fourth grader Shayla Bonewell said.
