COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A Colorado Springs police surveillance effort set in the area of Highway 115 and Star Ranch Road on Tuesday morning resulted in the arrest of five men on heroin charges.
Police saw an alleged known heroin user, John Stave, entering a black Ford Bronco with two other white males, the driver identified as Aaron Wangelin. A fourth white male, identified as Chad Peace, was picked up off of Cheyenne Mountain Boulevard.
Surveillance followed the vehicle north to a neighborhood near Union Boulevard and Palmer Park where the suspects made contact with a Hispanic male driving a gold Nissan Altima.
A white male, identified as Mark Higgins, exited the Bronco and entered the Nissan. Higgins then returned to the Bronco and both vehicles were followed from the area. The four heroin users, occupying the Bronco had pulled over and were preparing to inject or smoke the $100 worth of tar heroin they had purchased.
CSPD officers contacted both vehicles and all five men were arrested.
The Hispanic male driver, identified as Jose Enrique Del Real-Avalos, a Mexican national, was arrested with 17 additional balloons of tar heroin in his possession, according to police.
