DENVER (AP) — State lawmakers are considering some changes to proposed medical marijuana regulations after hearing concerns from patients and dispensary owners.

The first hearing on the rules ended late Thursday without a vote.

Under the rules, dispensaries would be licensed and would have to grow most of their own marijuana. People would be barred from using the drug within 1,000 feet of a school, which could prevent many patients from using the drug in their homes.

Dispensaries largely favor some kind of regulation to ensure they're recognized as legal businesses. But some smaller shops fear only larger operations will be able to meet the standards.

Many in law enforcement don't want to recognize dispensaries at all because they aren't specifically mentioned in the state's voter-approved marijuana law.
