COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Sophie Thunberg of Cascade has been named the recipient of the 2009 Zonta Club of the Pikes Peak Area Young Women in Public Affairs Award. She is a senior at Manitou Springs High School.

The goal of the Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Program is to encourage more young women to participate in public and political life by recognizing her commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to the advancement of the status of women. The award is given to young women ages 16 to 20.

Applicants are asked to reflect on their voluntary commitment to their school and community, and problems limiting the advancement of the status of women in their own country and worldwide.

The Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs program looks to the young women of today to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Thunberg was named Zonta Club of the Pikes Peak Area Young Women in Public Affairs recipient because she demonstrates a strong commitment to improving the lives of women and children through her studies in international relations. She hopes to work with children in developing countries with a focus on environmental sustainability efforts. Thunberg believes that "our earth and children are the two most essential roots of society in preserving peace and wellness."

Thunberg plans to begin her college studies at New York University in Paris, entering the Liberal Studies Program as a freshman in the fall of 2009.

Zonta International, with world headquarters in Chicago, IL, is a global organization of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy. The YWPA Award is one of many programs for women and girls sponsored by Zonta International. The award is funded by voluntary contributions to the Zonta International Foundation.
