COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado is home to many different habitats and is home to more than 900 different types of species.
The vast majority -- birds --are not considered dangerous. The predators that are dangerous usually become that way because of a need for food.
Bears are often the source of caution. During specific times of the year, they will come down into the populated foothills in search for food. While they are not coming to attack, there will be a human confrontation every once in a while.
The bears in Colorado are part of the black bear species. They are generally less agressive than other bear species and therefore pose less of a threat.
Mountain lions are also known to attack, but usually will keep their distance from humans.
In the unlikely event that you do run across an aggressive animal like a bear or mountain lion, you must use extreme caution.
* Most importantly, stay calm.
* Maintain focus on the bear as you back away.
* Keep cognizant of your surroundings so you do not disturb any other animal that may be with the pack.
Deer can also be aggressive. Earlier in October, a woman was attacked by a deer in Teller County.
The biggest hazard in Colorado? Not deer attacks, necessarily, but crashes between deer and vehicles on roadways. Safe driving skills will avoid confrontation with wldlife.
This should not deter you from enjoying the Colorado wild. When hiking be aware of your surroundings and know what to do should you come across a dangerous animal.

No animals, were used in the mock scenarios, of course. Instead local team mascots from UCCS and Palmer Ridge helped out.
