PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) — An openly gay man and a 60-year-old woman are among the three candidates for homecoming queen at Colorado State University-Pueblo this year.

CSU-Pueblo says it's never had a male student or a senior citizen run for homecoming queen.

Twenty-one-year-old DeMarques Taylor says some students have asked him why he isn't running for homecoming king instead. Taylor says running for queen feels more comfortable. He says his goal is to promote diversity and acceptance of gay students.

He is running against 60-year-old senior Juanita Whitaker and sophomore Jazmine Wells.

CSU-Pueblo doesn't have any rules on who can run.

Elections are Thursday.
